The most ground-breaking announcement came when Nikon announced they had completed aquisition of US Cinema Camera Manufacturer RED.com. With the announcement quickly came the launch of the Nikon ZR - A Full Frame Compact Cine Camera now adorned with a TIPA 2026 World Award!

The ZR launches at a time where creating content is in higher demand than ever and it caters to those who demand more work from their gear. A partnership with one of the cinema industries most well-known names, RED was sure to pique the interest of filmmakers, and videographers a-like and Nikon and RED made sure to pack it full of awesome tech.

RED Colour Science & Dual Base ISO Features

Powered by RED colour science, you have access to R3D NE video Codec, Log3G10 Encoding Curve giving you insane flexibility and HDR features and finally, RED Wide Gamut - All these features mean that if you're already a member and user of the RED ecosystem, you can seamlessly intergrate the ZR into your kit if you're looking for a super sleek and compact system. The ZR also features Dual-base ISO between 800 / 6400 - This means that you get the same smoothness and noise-free footage at 800 ISO, but you get the benefits of ISO 6400 instead. A Game changer when tackling multiple lighting situations and locations. The ZR also features 15+ Stops of dynamic range, so all details, elements, shadows and highlights are taken care of.

The ZR & Audio - What's Under the Hood?

Packed with 3 MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) microphones & 3.5mm jack 32-bit float audio, you get rich sounding pick-up and more finesse when it comes to handling distortion or clipping.

Q: "What does "3 MEMS Microphones" mean?"
A: Glad you asked! In very simple terms, MEMS are a super small audio pick-up that due to their small size and construction, mitigate unwanted vibration and audio disturbances to ensure clearer sound. They are also omnidirectional, meaning it picks-up on audio all around it's general effective field. MEMS also use very little power to operate, which is great for cameras! By having 3 in the camera, you can often select a "pick-up pattern" which tells the MEMS to focus in different areas, such as Front, Rear and Stereo - You just select the closest option to suit your needs at the time!

As For Filming...Let's Get Into It!

Experience 6K 12-Bit RAW at 60P or if you want to produce high-end slow motion footage, you can get 4K 120P (DX cropped) for up to 5x Slow Motion. You can also apply RED-Curated Imaging Recipes, such as CineBias_RED. Not what you're looking for? Good thing the Nikon Imaging Cloud service exists - where you can explore more styles created by others in the industry! Immediately apply them in camera or, share you're own custom made one!

Weighing in at 630g (body only) - The Nikon ZR somehow manages to squeeze in 5-axis vibration reduction system, up to 7.5 stops with a VR Lens, whisper-quiet cooling system a 4 Inch vari-angle touch screen, which is so satisfying to interact with, thanks to the larger display area.

With all these amazing features, the Nikon ZR forms a formidable tool of creation in the industry. There are also multiple lens kit options to get you started if you don't already own some Nikon Z Glass, but for those who have already invested in Nikon Mirrorless gear, you can safely choose the body only option and hit the ground running.
